Government Tree
Add your comment for Idea: Government TreeBuilding a UI of the government from the top down, which is multimedia (Adobe Flash) so the public can visually see how all the agencies connect and who they report too? From the top down so users can view the highest of government, down to the city they live in. All data could be connected to the agency it pertains to, and its representatives, with picture and years in office.

I suggest you update the US website to be reflective of the issues we all face as American people. Canada's website tells the people exactly what is going on and the major decisions the government has made to fix some of Canada's problems. You need to do what smart companies are doing and empower those directly dealing with the programs or data to have authority to make decisions without having to run it through 4 different layers first. Build Data Catalogs in the Cloud in Support of Data.gov & EPA's Strategic Data Action Plan

Weight the Rating column by the number of votes.
1 comment for Idea: Weight the Rating column by the number of votes.The rating column is close to useless currently. If one person rates a dataset with 5 stars it sorts at the top. You need a concept of either popularity (most downloaded) or highest rated with some weighting for number of votes.

There are a large number of solutions in the Federal government that were realized because developers were allowed to experiment with varying technologies. It is important that developers be enabled.

Change "join the dialogue" to "join the conversation"
I applaud the Data.gov "powers that be" for enabling conversations ranging from strategy to technology by implementing this Ideascale-based site. I believe, however, that the site is mis-named. As the great author and consultant Peter Block has said, communities are about *conversations*. This is not mere semantics; participatory conversations amongst concerned stakeholders are inherently different than "dialogues," ...more »

I'd further like to point out that that the "Community" link at the Data.gov site is *mis-labelled*; it would be more accurate to label it something like "Partners." A true "Community" link should in fact point here, to this forum area, which is an embodiment of Data.gov's effort to foster community. As a citizen, I find it a bit offensive that I am not considered part of the Data.gov "community..."

This could be used as an alternative to Adobe Flash because of the inherent disadvantages of flash (lack of support on current phones/tablets excluding Android 2.2 devices, major stability and performance issues). This might also allow for specific apps to be made for the different mobile Operating Systems which as we have already seen with the expansion of the app stores breeds innovation and ideas that no one else ...more »

Add your comment for Idea: Find most recent additions to data catalogI'm always on the lookout for new data sets that I can use in teaching. To this end, it would be helpful if:
1) There were a way to notify me, e.g., by RSS, email, etc., when new data sets are added to the data catalog
2) There were a way to sort the list of data sets in the catalog by date entered

Foreign Per Diem Rate Monthly Data in XML
Add your comment for Idea: Foreign Per Diem Rate Monthly Data in XMLWe currently manually download the Foreign Per Diem rates posted in excel on this website each month: http://aoprals.state.gov/content.asp?content_id=233&menu_id=89
We import this data into our local travel expense database so we have to keep it up-to-date. If this data was posted in XML format, we believe we can automate the download/upload process that we're doing manually.

Data Standardization
All government agencies that provide data to the public should offer the data in standardized forms. This would include both the format (CSV, XML, SQL Server, Access, Oracle, etc.) and structure. For example, the State Energy Data System at EIA provides its annual data update in CSV, with columns for the variable name, location, date, and value. This would likely need to be modified for various applications, but if the columns are predictable it would make using the data far easier.
This could be taken one step further, to provide the data online to qualified users. For example, the data could be offered in a government-maintained SQL Server for webmasters and programmers to use directly without having to download and insert the data into their own or their host's server.

Visualize Energy Data
I have used several data sets from USDOE to enable graphical viewing of energy data. There are two components so far: one uses the State Energy Data System (SEDS) for annual, statewide data on consumption, expenditures, and prices by energy source, sector, and year. The second component uses gasoline and highway diesel pricess from USDOE, and is updated weekly. Visitors can display line graphs of prices by region of the US, or for some states and cities (limited only by the availablility of data).

Federal budget
One of the ways that the open-source/crowdsourcing idea could be used to create greater government transparency would be to include the federal budget. The basic page would show the CBO or OMB projections for revenue/expenses and allow the user to adjust future economic growth/inflation/healthcare inflation to see what it would do to the federal budget deficit/surplus. The next addition would be to include federal taxation into the equation to allow the user to see the impact of changes to federal taxation to the overall budget picture.
The final phase would be to include every item of spending currently in the budget and show the impact of expanding/reducing/eliminating any given program. Users could make their changes and then submit the modified budget. The data from these submissions could then be aggregated to see what programs have the most support for expanding or reducing and this could be then used as another metric to view the public support for different programs.
